Ayn Rand's Ideal Man
Before Howard Roark, before Atlas Shrugged, Rand sketched her first hero — and based him on a man who kidnapped and dismembered a twelve-year-old. The real quotes don't need to be exaggerated. Neither does the fence.

When Rand reached for a picture of human greatness, the raw material she chose was a man defined by the absence of any feeling for others — then she cleaned it up into a philosophy.
This grades the foundation of Randian individualism against her own journals — and marks exactly where the viral version overreaches.

Rand modeled her first sketch of an 'ideal man' — Danny Renahan of the unfinished 'The Little Street' — on Hickman's psychology, in her own journals.

Who Hickman was: in December 1927 he kidnapped 12-year-old Marian Parker from her school, murdered and dismembered her, and taunted her family in ransom notes signed 'The Fox.'
FACT
One of the most notorious criminals in America in 1928; caught by fingerprints from a prior forgery, confessed, executed 1928. This is the man whose psychology Rand called the 'strongest expression of a real man's.'
Declassified
The part the viral version omits: Rand did NOT endorse the murder — she called the real Hickman 'a purposeless monster' and blamed society for producing him.

The trait she abstracted carried forward — into Howard Roark, described in her notes by 'his own superiority and the utter worthlessness of the world.'
FACT
The core Rand admired in Hickman — self as sovereign, world as worthless, herd as nothing — is the core she built into the architect-hero who dynamites a housing project rather than compromise. Continuity of an idea across her notebooks, not 'Roark is Hickman.'

The line to a governing philosophy is real as influence — but 'the Hickman admiration IS the philosophy' is a frame, not a proven chain.

Greenspan was in her inner circle before chairing the Fed; Paul Ryan credited Atlas Shrugged for his career. The influence is documented; the direct '1928 diary → Reaganomics' causal claim is an interpretive frame. We pose it, not assert it.

What we lionize, and what it's made of.
The Austerity Myth grades what the ideology does — that trickle-down failed every real test. This grades what it's made of. A philosophy that treats concern for other people as a weakness didn't fall from the sky: its founder went looking for the ideal human being and reached, at first, for a man to whom other people did not register as real. She recoiled from what he did and kept the trait that let him do it. Being precise about that is the point — the unexaggerated version is the one that lasts.
