Barak, Carbyne & the Israeli Tech Pipeline
Epstein's money and a former Israeli PM built a surveillance company that outlived the scandal by seven years.
Epstein's seed money and Barak's access built a 911-dispatch surveillance company that changed hands among mainstream US venture firms for years after his death and sold for $625 million.
Founders Fund entered in 2018, not Andreessen Horowitz — a16z came later, in 2021-2022. Neither firm is shown to have known Epstein's role, Barak's knowledge of Epstein's crimes is not established, and the FD-1023's existence is not proof of what its source alleged. Each is graded on its own tier.
From Wexner Foundation payments to the closed Axon sale.
Axon's 2025-2026 acquisition price for Carbyne — Epstein's original bet compounding inside mainstream venture rounds seven years after his death. Forbes's estimate that a retained Epstein stake could have topped $100M is a hypothetical, held separate and lower.

Barak and Epstein negotiated the Reporty/Carbyne investment by email in December 2014, and Epstein's attorney worked to keep it undisclosed.
DOJ-released estate documents preserve Barak's own line to Epstein — that "by Monday evening we will be ripe for decision on th[e] investment" — and Darren Indyke's effort to keep the deal off the public record. This moved the claim from 2019 press sourcing to primary paper in 2026.
Peter Thiel's Founders Fund — not Andreessen Horowitz — was Carbyne's first outside institutional investor, entering in August 2018 as the fund's first Israeli portfolio company.
Reuters reported the 2018 investment at the time. a16z's money came later, as a participant in the 2021 Series B and 2022 Series C, after Epstein's death and the Reporty-to-Carbyne rebrand. Conflating the two firms or their entry dates is the factual error this page exists to correct.
The rest of the record.
- The Wexner Foundation paid Barak roughly $2.3M for research in 2004-2006, with Epstein signing some transfer forms as a trustee — the origin of the financial relationship.
- Epstein's Southern Trust Company invested through the Sum (E.B.) 2015 partnership, which held all of Carbyne's Series A preferred stock; Nicole Junkermann put in about $500,000 alongside him.
- Barak chaired Reporty/Carbyne after the 2015 investment closed, and acknowledged the partnership publicly to the Times of Israel in July 2019.
- The Daily Beast documented multiple Barak visits to Epstein's Manhattan residence with photographs, which Barak acknowledged on the record.
- a16z participated in the 2021 Series B and 2022 Series C alongside CRV, Y Combinator, and former CIA director David Petraeus as an individual investor — a real but later, secondary position.
- A January 2026 DOJ release included an FBI FD-1023 confidential-source report (EFTA00090314) naming Barak alongside Alan Dershowitz. Its existence and the names it contains are facts; the truth of the source's underlying claims is unresolved.
Barak's post-2015 correspondence with Epstein and his staff reflects an ongoing operational relationship, not casual contact.
USA Today's and Al Jazeera's review of emails from 2005 to 2017 shows Barak relaying messages to Larry Summers and Alan Dershowitz through Epstein, and his wife coordinating property stays directly with Epstein's staff. The volume supports the read strongly — but no single document says "operational relationship" outright. That is this page's characterization of the pattern, graded below the FACT spine.
Barak used his access to open specific US government procurement pathways for Carbyne.
Plausible given the access Barak had, but no primary document in the public record shows him introducing Epstein or Carbyne to a named US procurement official. Carbyne's later US municipal and government 911 contracts are public record on their own terms, built over years under multiple owners; nothing currently public ties them to a Barak-brokered introduction. Graded SOME SMOKE and no higher.
What the record shows, and what it does not.
- The Dec 2014 negotiation email and Indyke's effort to keep it undisclosed — now primary documents, not press paraphrase.
- The Sum (E.B.) 2015 structure, Barak's chair, and the photographed visits.
- Founders Fund's 2018 first-outside-investor entry and the $625M Axon sale.
- Any Barak-brokered introduction of Carbyne to a named US procurement contact (SOME SMOKE).
- That the FD-1023's source told the FBI the truth — the form records a claim, it does not adjudicate it.
- That Founders Fund or a16z knew of Epstein's role in the cap table when they invested.
The primary document showing Barak introducing Epstein or Carbyne to a named US procurement official is missing.
A primary-source record tying Carbyne's US government and municipal 911 contracts to a specific Barak-brokered introduction — and the full list of Israeli technology investments Epstein participated in that remain undisclosed.
Help us fill it →Why it matters now.
Epstein and Barak built the seed structure in 2014-2015. Founders Fund legitimized it for mainstream venture capital in 2018. a16z, CRV, Y Combinator, and a former CIA director added their names in 2021-2022. Axon bought the result for $625 million. None of the later money is alleged to have known the Epstein origin — and it did not need to for the asset to keep compounding. Barak is the same bridge figure who recurs across the surveillance-infrastructure story in Toka and Unit 8200.
