The Extermination Order
Most of this hub's crimes hid their intent. This one wrote it down and signed it — a general's order to shoot a whole people, women and children included, out of existence.
Imperial Germany committed the first genocide of the 20th century against the Herero and Nama — killing ~80% of the Herero and ~half the Nama through a written extermination order, deliberate death in the desert, and concentration camps.

In German South-West Africa (now Namibia), colonial forces killed roughly 80% of the Herero and about half the Nama — in battle, driven into the Omaheke desert to die of thirst, and worked to death in camps. Widely called the first genocide of the 20th century, and formally recognized as genocide by Germany itself in 2021.
The dehumanizing doctrine was a signed military order: von Trotha's Vernichtungsbefehl, and his aim to annihilate the Herero 'as a nation.'
After Waterberg, General Lothar von Trotha ordered that every Herero within the colony — 'with or without a gun' — be shot, and that women and children be driven back into the desert or fired upon. In his own words he stated the goal: the Herero nation 'must be annihilated.' The doctrine this hub usually reconstructs was here written down and signed.
Survivors were interned in concentration camps — Shark Island the deadliest — and worked, starved, and frozen to death.
When Berlin nominally revoked the shooting order, it substituted extermination by internment. Survivors were held in Konzentrationslager; the most lethal, Shark Island ('Death Island') off Lüderitz, killed a large share of those sent there through forced labor, exposure, and starvation — among the earliest camps of the century to bear that name and function.
The dead became specimens: skulls shipped to Germany for race science, experiments in the camps (Eugen Fischer).
Imprisoned women were made to scrape the flesh from the skulls of their own dead so the skulls could be sent to Germany for 'research' into racial hierarchy. Eugen Fischer, who deemed the Africans an 'inferior race,' used the colony as a eugenics laboratory and went on to shape the next generation of race scientists. The victims were made proof, to their killers, that they had never been fully human.
Serious historians argue the genocide was a precursor — a 'blueprint' — for the Holocaust.
Attributed and contested. Olusoga & Erichsen's 'The Kaiser's Holocaust' traces real continuities: the vocabulary of the concentration camp, the fusion of race science with state power, and personal threads to Nazi figures (Eugen Fischer's eugenics; Hermann Göring's father was the colony's first governor). The continuities are documented, but a direct causal 'blueprint' is debated among historians — so we pose it, we don't assert it.
Germany recognized the genocide in 2021 — but called the money 'aid,' not reparations, and the descendants rejected it.

Where the Persian famine sits at the hub's quiet end — killing by indifference, no doctrine to quote — this case is the other extreme: intent, in writing, signed. A general ordered a whole people shot out of existence, sealed the desert against the fleeing, built the camps, and sent the skulls home to be measured. It is also a crime the record tried to lose — called a colonial 'war' for a century, its recognition delayed to 2021 and even now hedged. First the killing, then the forgetting — the pattern this hub exists to reverse.
